How this calculator works

We estimate your dog’s daily calories using the Resting Energy Requirement (RER = 70 × BW0.75) multiplied by life-stage and activity factors (MER). We then convert calories to grams/cups using the energy density of your selected food.

  • Puppies: 2–4 mo ≈ 3.0× RER • 4–12 mo ≈ 2.0× RER
  • Adults: Sedentary 1.2× • Low 1.4× • Average 1.6× • Active 2.0× • Athlete 2.8×
  • Seniors: Typically 1.3–1.5× depending on activity.

Dog Food Calculator FAQs

Should I use current or ideal weight?

Use ideal weight if your dog needs to gain or lose weight. Otherwise, use current weight.

How many meals per day?

Most adults do well with 2 meals/day. Puppies often need 3–4 smaller meals.

What if my kibble’s calories per cup are unknown?

Check the bag or the brand’s website. If unsure, start with 360 kcal/cup and adjust based on body condition after 2–3 weeks.

Is raw feeding amount based on % body weight?

Yes. Adults commonly eat 2–3% of body weight per day. Puppies may need 5–10% split across more meals.
